Terra ferma - Terra firme

Una notte al mare, onde, un trattore, una razza appena pescata.
Uno sguardo che tutto osserva e osservando descrive e descrivendo capisce.
Capire, dal latino capio - contengo vuol dire accettare, tenere in sé. A volte amare.
Senza giudicare, o sospendendo il giudizio, il che è una cosa diversa.

Una notte al mare una ragazza sembra un inizio di romanzo.
Ma è ciò che è successo e che il video racconta: lo racconta a sbalzi, come schegge di luce e di memoria. Accettando la parzialità, la soggettività e l'incompletezza del racconto.

La regista di questo lavoro è Matilde Sambo.
Artista che lavora con diversi media. In questo caso un video finora inedito di cui sono protagonisti i Pescatori, su una spiaggia del Portogallo e i Pesci, e la Notte che tutto ammanta ma a tratti rivela.

Una notte al mare una ragazza e dei pesci, a centinaia.
Come nello strano miracolo di Gesù.
Lui era sempre un pò sbrigativo. Immaginate che siete a una conferenza e in mancanza di un servizio di catering gli organizzatori vi diano per pranzo un pesce. Crudo. Già che faceva il miracolo, il pesce non poteva averlo già cotto e su di un piatto magari?

Gocce di pioggia, guizzi, baluginii, creste d'onda, riflessi, gibigiane. Tutte immagini impermanenti, cangianti a ogni attimo, che ipnotizzano perché sempre uguali e sempre diverse, un numero infinito.

Queste immagini scintillanti sembrano (non possono essere, non ne hanno il tempo: possono solo sembrare) sembrano un qualcosa che sta per avvenire e definiscono quella landa deserta, quella Terra di Nessuno fra la Morte e la Speranza. Quella sempre soverchia. Ma questa vince.

Permanenti invece, anzi appunti amorosi di ciò che è, o è stato, o potrebbe essere sono una serie di disegni in grafite. Sambo sembra cercare il suo soggetto mentre lo disegna. Come se l’idea le si rivelasse mentre la mano procede nel disegno. Anzi la matita in questi lavori, pare essere stata l’equivalente della bacchetta di un rabdomante. Chi cerca, trova, si dice: ma non sempre si trova ciò che si stava cercando. Questi disegni sembrano fratelli dei disegni di Anatomia, per via del ductus morbido ma anche hanno la nettezza grafica di fogli d'erbario. Anzi, tutte e due insieme. E collocandosi spesso capricciosamente non al centro del foglio, sembrano testimoniare la libertà del mondo biologico.

Esoscheletri di esseri marini. Condotti interni di organi indeterminati. Lamine fogliari spogliate da insetti ... tutto sta con tutto in una sorprendente armonia.


A night at the seaside, waves, a tractor, a freshly caught ray.
A gaze that observes everything and, in observing, describes and, in describing, understands.
To understand, from the Latin capio - I contain, means to accept, to hold within oneself. Sometimes to love.
Without judging, or suspending judgement, which is a different thing.

A night at the seaside, a girl... it sounds like the beginning of a novel. But it is what happened and what the video recounts: it recounts it in flashes, like fragments of light and memory. Accepting the partiality, subjectivity and incompleteness of the story.

The director of this work is Matilde Sambo. An artist who works with different media. In this case, a previously unseen video featuring fishermen on a beach in Portugal, fish, and the night that envelops everything but occasionally reveals it.

One night at the sea, a girl and hundreds of fishes. Like in the strange miracle of Jesus.
He was always a bit hasty. Imagine you are at a conference and, in the absence of a catering service, the organisers give you a fish for lunch. Raw. Since he was performing a miracle, couldn't he have cooked the fish and served it on a plate?

Raindrops, flashes, glimmers, wave crests, reflections, shimmers. All impermanent images, changing every moment, hypnotising because they are always the same and always different, an infinite number.

These sparkling images seem (they cannot be, they do not have the time: they can only seem) to be something that is about to happen and define that deserted land, that No Man's Land between Death and Hope. That always overwhelms. But this wins.

Permanent, on the other hand, or rather loving notes of what is, or was, or could be, are a series of graphite drawings. Sambo seems to search for her subject as she draws it. As if the idea were revealed to her as her hand proceeds with the drawing. Indeed, in these works, the pencil seems to have been the equivalent of a dowser's rod. Those who seek shall find, they say, but one does not always find what one was looking for. These drawings seem to be siblings of the Anatomy drawings, due to their soft ductus, but they also have the graphic clarity of herbarium sheets. Indeed, they have both. And by often being capriciously placed off-centre on the page, they seem to bear witness to the freedom of the biological world.

Exoskeletons of marine creatures. Internal ducts of indeterminate organs. Leaf blades stripped by insects... everything fits together in surprising harmony.


Uma noite à beira-mar, ondas, um trator, uma raia acabada de apanhar.
Um olhar que observa tudo e que, ao observar, descreve e, ao descrever, compreende.
Compreender, do latim capio — eu contenho — significa aceitar, acolher dentro de si. Por vezes, amar.
Sem julgar, ou suspendendo o julgamento, que é uma coisa diferente.

Uma noite à beira-mar, uma rapariga... soa como o início de um romance. Mas é o que aconteceu e é o que o vídeo conta: conta-o em lampejos, como fragmentos de luz e de memória. Aceitando a parcialidade, a
subjetividade e a incompletude da história.

A realizadora desta obra é Matilde Sambo. Uma artista que trabalha com diferentes medias. Neste caso, um vídeo até agora inédito, com pescadores numa praia em Portugal, peixes e a noite que tudo envolve, mas que por vezes se deixa revelar.

Uma noite no mar, uma rapariga e centenas de peixes. Como no estranho milagre de Jesus.
Ele foi sempre um pouco apressado. Imagina que estás numa conferência e, na ausência de serviço
de catering, os organizadores te dão um peixe para o almoço. Cru. Já que estava a fazer um milagre, não
podia tê-lo cozinhado e servido num prato?

Pingos de chuva, relâmpagos, cintilações, cristas das ondas, reflexos, brilhos. Todas imagens impermanentes, mudando a cada instante, hipnotizantes porque são sempre as mesmas e sempre diferentes, em número infinito.

Estas imagens cintilantes parecem (não podem ser, não têm tempo: apenas podem parecer) algo que está
prestes a acontecer e que define essa terra deserta, essa Terra de Ninguém entre a Morte e a Esperança.
Que sempre avassala. Mas aqui vence. 

Permanentes, por outro lado — ou melhor, notas amorosas do que é, ou foi, ou poderia ser — são uma
série de desenhos a grafite. Sambo parece procurar o seu sujeito enquanto o desenha. Como se a ideia
lhe fosse revelada à medida que a mão avança no desenho. De facto, nestas obras, o lápis parece ter sido
o equivalente a uma vara de adivinhação. Diz-se que quem procura encontra, mas nem sempre se encontra
aquilo que se procurava.

Estes desenhos parecem irmãos dos desenhos de Anatomia, pelo seu ductus suave, mas têm também a clareza gráfica das pranchas de herbário. Na verdade, têm ambas as coisas. E, estando muitas vezes
colocados de forma caprichosa fora do centro da página, parecem testemunhar a liberdade do mundo
biológico.

Exoesqueletos de criaturas marinhas. Ductos internos de órgãos indeterminados. Lâminas de folhas
despidas por insetos... tudo se articula numa harmonia surpreendente.
